Tỉnh Thừa Thiên - Huế đã cấp phép cho Cty CP Thế Diệu (thuộc Cty TNHH World Shine Hong Kong, Trung Quốc) xây dựng khu du lịch nghỉ dưỡng ở đèo Hải Vân có vốn đầu tư lên đến 250 triệu USD. Tuy nhiên, địa điểm này được các nhà nghiên cứu xem là khu vực trọng yếu về quốc phòng nên việc triển khai dự án bị dư luận phản ứng rất gay gắt.

Vietnamese migration to the United States has occurred in three waves, the first beginning in 1975 at the end of the Vietnam War, when the fall of Saigon led to the U.S.-sponsored evacuation of approximately 125,000 Vietnamese refugees. For more than three years now, Syrians have endured the loss and hardship caused by a protracted civil war. At the moment, Syrian government forces are fighting several rebel groups spread throughout the country, as well as ISIS, the militant group attempting to form a new state carved out of Syria and Iraq. The smaller rebel groups are fighting each other, and just about everyone in the region is fighting ISIS, assisted by airstrikes carried out by a U.S.-led coalition. Pockets of Damascus are stable enough for residents to carry on normal lives, while some distant rural villages have been reduced to rubble. Basic necessities are rare in contested areas, and refugee camps in neighboring countries are still growing. Battles and attacks continue across Syria among the many parties, with no clear end in sight—those caught in the crossfire suffering most. Chiều 19/11/2014 Hà Nội đã vào cuối thu, lạnh. Tôi tranh thủ đến thăm sức khỏe lão tướng Nguyễn Trọng Vĩnh. Tôi quen biết cụ đã gần 40 năm nay và rất kính trọng và khâm phục cụ về nhân cách, đạo đức cũng như tấm lòng của cụ đối với dân và đất nước. Dù năm nay đã 99 tuổi song cụ vẫn nhanh nhẹn, khỏe mạnh và minh mẫn! Mặc dù hơn tôi 26 tuổi song cụ vẫn coi tôi là một người bạn vong niên thân thiết. Tiếp tôi, ngoài cụ còn có con gái cụ là nhà văn Nguyên Bình và chồng chị là anh Trịnh Văn Trà, một đại tá quân đội đã nghỉ hưu.

Từ khi đọc những bài viết trên báo về câu chuyện cha con “hai lúa" Trần Quốc Hải ở Tây Ninh đã chế tạo, cải tiến cả xe bọc thép, được Thủ tướng Hunsen và Quốc vương Norodom Sihamoni (Campuchia) ghi nhận, trọng thưởng, tôi thấy lòng buồn, vui lẫn lộn.

Ban đầu, ông Hải được Quốc vương Campuchia tặng bằng khen và gọi ông là "nhà khoa học". Còn Trần Quốc Thanh, con trai ông thì được gọi là "kỹ sư, nhà kỹ thuật". Trong lễ kỷ niệm 25 năm ngày thành lập Lữ đoàn 70 (ngày 13.10 vừa qua) của quân đội Hoàng gia Campuchia, cha con ông Hải lại được Thủ tướng Hunsen trao tặng Huân chương Đại tướng quân do Quốc vương ký ban tặng.

Gasometers - Vienna, Austria - 48.185°N 16.420°E

The Gasometers in Vienna, Austria originally served as massive gas tanks from 1896 to 1984. With the city's changeover from town gas to natural gas starting 1969, the tanks were no longer used and were shut down. However, the brick exterior walls were preserved and the structures were repurposed with residential (~800 apartments) and commercial (facilities include music hall, movie theater, and shopping mall) spaces at the turn of the century.

'Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red'

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the start of World War I in 1914. On this year's Armistice Day in London, a massive work of art dedicated to commonwealth servicemen and women lost a century ago reached its conclusion. The evolving installation, titled "Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red", began back on July 17, with the placing of a single ceramic poppy in the moat of the Tower of London. In the months since, another 888,245 poppies were added, each representing a military fatality from World War I. The poppies were arranged to appear as a flowing sea of blood pouring from the Tower's "Weeping Window". Nov. 9 marks the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. But if you’re a cash-strapped history buff, you don’t have to go to Berlin to witness a slice of communist memorabilia.

Since the fall, parts of the infamous 90-mile long concrete divider have been scattered around the globe. Whether sold as mementos or installed as public monuments, these concrete slabs are Cold War relics worth a second look.

This weekend, Germany will observe the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. The German Democratic Republic (East Germany) began erecting the barrier in 1961, building on existing checkpoints, and fortified it over nearly 30 years: The initial waist-high wooden gates gave way to massive concrete structures with buffer zones known as "death strips." The Berlin Wall was intended to halt the steady stream of defections from the Eastern Bloc; during its existence, only about 5,000 people managed to cross over, escaping into West Berlin. More than 100 are believed to have been killed in the attempt, most shot by East German border guards. In 1989, waves of protest in East Berlin and a flood of defections through neighboring Hungary and Czechoslovakia led the government to finally allow free passage across the border. West German citizens swarmed the wall, pulling parts of it down with hammers and machinery, an act that set the stage for Germany's reunification. [36 photos]
