Aerial photos show path of destruction in the wake of two terrifying tornadoes that ravaged a small Nebraska town, killing a five-year-old girl as she was trying to seek shelter

Path of destruction: The tornado crushed much of the small downtown, leaving piles of bricks that had been storefronts in the street

  • Witnesses in Pilger, Nebraska said Monday evening that the prairie village of around 370 residents had been nearly wiped off the face of the earth
  • Twin tornadoes measured to have had the fearsome EF-4 rating struck the so-called 'Town Too Tuff To Die' starting Monday afternoon
  • Calista Dixon, 5, and 74-year-old David Herout identified as the two fatalities in the disaster
  • Twisters moving at 200mph destroyed or heavily damaged 75 per cent of all buildings in town

Trail of dead cows lays bare the destruction of Southern tornadoes as another 11 die in powerful Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee twisters

A horrifying trail of dead and injured farm animals was photographed in an Arkanas field - just a few of the many victims affected by a series of tornadoes that swept across Arkansas and Oklahoma on Sunday
  • The three states were hit by a series of tornadoes on Monday evening
  • At least 11 people are reported dead - seven in Mississippi, two confirmed in Alabama and two more in Tennessee
  • A woman died earlier on Monday in Mississippi when her car either hydroplaned or blew off a road during the storm in Verona, south of Tupelo
  • Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant had earlier declared a state of emergency in advance of the dangerous storms
  • Twisters killed at least 15 people in Arkansas and Oklahoma on Sunday and the powerful storm system is set to continue to threatened large parts of the South until Wednesday

At least 16 people have been killed by tornadoes as a huge storm system swept across the central and southern United States

Not over yet: After deadly tornadoes ripped through the area on April 27, Mississippi, Arkansas, Texas, Louisiana, and Tennessee are all under watch as multiple storms over the next few days are expected

At least 16 dead after tornadoes cause devastation across central states as forecasters warn another HUNDRED twisters could hit the area this week

  • More than a hundred tornadoes set to hit the central states this week at the start of the nation's tornado season
  • The Arkansas tornado touched down about 10 miles west of Little Rock at around 7 p.m.
  • It moved northeastward for at least 30 miles leaving a path of destruction - severe property damage
  • Tornado caused havoc on the Arkansas towns of Mayflower and Vilonia
  • Storm-watchers fear that Midwest states like Kansas, Arkansas and Missouri face a high risk of tornadoes this week
  • More storms are expected Monday in the South and Mississippi Valley
  • The 11-month-old boy whose home was destroyed on Friday during tornado in North Carolina has died
  • President Obama said in a statement: 'Your country will be there to help you recover and rebuild, as long as it takes'
