The cleanliness of top hotels in China have been called into question after staff at two high-end establishments were accused of using the same cloths to wipe toilets and drinking glasses.

Video clips have emerged which show employees at Binjiang Long Sheraton Hotel and the JW Marriott Hotel in the city of Hangzhou apparently using one cloth for everything, while cleaning bathrooms for guests.

News came out after undercover reporters from Hangzhou TV station visited both renowned brands - where rooms often cost more than 1,000 yuan (£104) to stay per night - according to the People's Daily Online.

Hangzhou is the provincial capital of Zhejiang and one of China's fastest growing cities. It is also a major tourist destination with many choosing to stop at establishments like these.

It follows the recent scandal over allegations that a number of the Hangzhou Kuajie Hotel's cleaners were using bath towels to wipe down toilets.

Now Hangzhou TV station reporters claim to have have found that some five star hotels are doing the same.

The video shows cleaning staff using 'multipurpose' towels to wipe down washbasins, bathtubs, toilet as well as glasses.

Poor hygiene: Footage reveals a cleaner using the same yellow cloth on facilities across the whole bathroom

Chinese media suggested that staff use the same towel to clean different rooms, leaving guests at risk of using a drinking glass that has been rubbed 'clean' by a towel after it was used to clean other toilets.

Journalists have since been turning up at various hotels across the city and secretly filming the activities of the cleaning staff.

The footage has caused outcry on social media with people united in their repulsion, leaving comments such as 'That's disgusting!'

Professionals from the hotel industry in China said towels and bedsheets were not allowed to be used for wiping down surfaces.

They insist cleaning staff use different coloured clothes for different areas of the room.
