Postcards from border country: Walls, waterfalls, a line in a library and the divider you can see from space are among some of the world's most unusual frontiers

  • While some border crossings are marked by signs, others are consist of heavily-guarded fences that span for miles
  • The border which separates India and Pakistan hosts a 'flag lowering' and gate closing ceremony each evening

No two international borders are the same, as these stunning or unusual photos will reveal.

While some are simply marked by sign post, others consist of heavily guarded fences spanning thousands of miles.

And then there are those with some of the most breathtaking scenery on earth. They include magical Victoria Falls, a Unesco World Heritage Site that separates Zimbabwe and Zambia in Africa, and Niagara Falls at the Canada-US border - one of the most popular tourist attractions in the world.

The World Heritage Site of Victoria Falls is a magnificent international border, separating the African countries of Zimbabwe and Zambia

The border between Mexico and the United States is another fascinating point of interest, as the San Ysidro/El Chaparral crossing is the busiest in the world.

A fence is clearly visible along the divide.

The Attari-Wagah border, which separates India and Pakistan is known for its elaborate border closing ceremony, also known as the 'lowering of the flags,' which takes place every evening.

The ceremony starts with parades by the soldiers from both the sides, and ends up in the perfectly coordinated lowering of the two nations' flags and closing of the gates.

One of the most unusual border crossings is found at the Haskell Library, which straddles the international border between Rock Island, Quebec in Canada and Derby Line, Vermont in the United States. A diagonal line across the floor marks the boundary.

At Baarle-Nassau in the Netherlands, a complicated border separates the town from Baarle-Hertog, Belgium.

Rooted in complex medieval treaties, land-swaps and sales, the border has been effectively and necessarily marked by iron pins on all streets for clarification.
