'Supermoon' lights up night sky

A so-called supermoon has lit up the night sky, where the Moon appears much bigger and brighter than normal. This picture was captured by Andrew McNeil in Aberdeen.
John Dunford said: "I took this this evening, just after the Moon had risen here in southern Spain, near the village of Competa. It was around 9.30pm or so."
Wolfram Schubert said about this picture of the supermoon: "Taken in Erfurt, central Germany. Acting as the foreground is the local St Mary's Cathedral.
The effect is created when the Moon reaches its closest point to Earth. Ghordon Ryan took this picture in the Netherlands.
Ximena Velez-Liendo witnessed the perigee moon rising above the clouds in the city of Cochabamba in central Bolivia.
Jon Brown from Toronto in Canada was visiting Padua in Italy and took this photo of the moon set against the Abbey of Santa Giustina while walking in the Prato dell Valle.

The supermoon could be seen from Hull in the UK, where Rob Deyes took this photo. He said:"I noticed the moon rising above the house tops. I whipped into the garden with my tripod and my camera and took around 30 shots at different exposures so I could see the silhouette of the roofs and the moon in full brightness.
The supermoon pokes through the clouds in this picture by Tim Nuttall in Withernsea, East Yorkshire. Many skywatchers in the UK may have missed the display because of cloudy skies - they will have to wait until August 2014 for the next one.
