Philippines: Filipinos protest against China over disputed sea territory

Hundreds of people gathered in the Philippine capital Manila for the 'Global day of protest', to rally against what the Philippine government call an occupation of the disputed sea territory of Ayungin Shoal. The rally was led by protest alliance the West Philippine Sea Coalition for the second year in a row and took place in front of the Chinese consulate, forcing the consulate to shut down its visa office while it lasted.

Beijing's claims to large parts of the West Philippine Sea, including the key area Ayungin Shoal, have created bilateral tension between the two nations..

Anti-riot police were present while protesters blew horns, wave flag and held up signs reading 'China stop bullying' and 'China, back off!' A group of Vietnamese also participated in the protest by holding up an anti-China banner, as they are prohibited from such demonstrations in their own nation. Rafael Alunan, Philippine Interior Secretary, also spoke at the demonstration.

The disputed territory is rich in oil and gas deposits and is currently laid claims to by six nations - China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Taiwan, Malaysia and Brunei.
