Muslims around the world are marking the "festival of the breaking of the fast" at the end of a month of fasting for Ramadan; this man in the Libyan city of Benghazi is one of an estimated 1.6 billion Muslims worldwide.(8 August 2013)
The special Eid prayer on the morning of Eid al-Fitr is performed in an open space. These Russian Muslims have gathered in a square in St Petersburg.
Here in Gaza, young girls take part in the morning prayer. During the month of Ramadan, Muslims do not eat from dawn to dusk.
Eid celebrations took a more political form at al-Nahda Square in Cairo, where supporters of the deposed Islamist President Mohammed Morsi have been camped for weeks demanding his reinstatement.

Many Muslims, like these Bangladeshis, like to travel to their home towns to celebrate Eid with family. Public transport overcrowding can be fatal: local papers are reporting that several people have died while travelling - five on an overcrowded boat and three falling from a bus.
As the holy fasting month of Ramadan comes to an end, Muslims in India are celebrating Eid al-Fitr.
